What are Ultra Violet Light Clarifiers (UVC)

What are Ultra Violet Light Clarifiers (UVC)

Ultra Violet Light Clarifiers (UVC) are most commonly used in a koi or backyard pond to get rid of that dreaded single cell algae, aka green soup. UVC as they are commonly known in short form are added inline from the pump to the filter.  Some filters are made with integrated UVC’s. The main and only aim of these is to sterilize the pond water as it passes through, basically they zap it!

So how do they work?

Inside the unit is a replaceable UV light.  These are effective for around 8000 hours so remember to replace Ultra Violet Light Clarifiers (UVC) at least annually.  He here at Pondh2o we stock all types and sizes for nearly every machine in the US pond market. Check out our large selection of UV Germicidal Bulbs.

They work by using 253NM light wavelength to sterilize the water as it passes the bulb.  Like bacteria, algae cells are totally safe for you and will not effect water chemistry.  Most important, always remember never look at a naked UV bulb as it can damage your eyes.

Things to Note:

Always keep the quartz sleeve clean.  This protects from the bulb from contact with the pond water, or would be like driving with a dirty windshield.  Check any chemicals you may add to ensure they are not affected by UV light.  Change the bulb at least every 12 month, even better every 6 months if you can afford it.

What is the difference between a Clarifier and Sterilizer

Sterilizers which are basically the same except for that they sterilize as the name suggests. Commonly used in the commercial aquaculture industry as another line of defense in preventing major parasite and bacteria outbreaks, the No1 aim is to get rid of and kill just about everything that passes by. To accomplish this they need to have a longer contact time with the water. Sterilizers require extremely slow flow rates so are not really suitable for backyard ponds that require higher flow rates for oxygen and filtration.
